Suvarna sat in the locked dark room crying. She recalled the days of her childhood. Her tiny village Meerakpur, the people, her family, her siblings, everything was fresh in her memories. Suvarna’s father was a poor farmer and her mother used to help her father in the fields. The fields belonged to the ‘Zamindar’ of that village, Thakur Pratap Singh. Thakur Pratap Singh was kind. He would understand the needs of the villagers and would employ them wherever he could. But then poverty was such that those jobs would never suffice for everyone. Suvarna’s father Raju and mother Jaya worked hard to make ends meet. But no amount of money was enough to feed 8 family members. Suvarna had 5 siblings. She was the eldest. Suvarna never went to school. When she was 10 years, she too started working in Pratap Singh’s field. Suvarna and her parents then earned somewhat enough to afford food to satiate the pangs of hunger. Nonetheless, life was very happy for Suvarna. After she came back home from the fields. She and one of her sisters would make lunch for everyone. Lunch would be mostly rice and lentil soup. They would make that in clay pots in their tiny hut. After eating lunch, Suvarna and her siblings would go out to play. They would make swings with ropes and swing to their heart’s content. In summer they would go to the lake adjacent to Pratap Singh’s villa. Swimming during summers meant bliss for the kids. Pratap Singh’s wife Ramya was a snob and had an air about being rich. However Pratap Singh was just her opposite.
It was a hot summer and Suvarna was around 12 and a half years old. She just hit puberty. Women in the village gathered for a small ceremony for Suvarna. Suvarna wore a saree which her mom had bought for her for this special occasion. Dusky complexion, skinny structure, short height, sharp features, kohl clad eyes, Suvarna looked adorable. That’s when Rupam noticed her. Rupam was around 20 years old. He lived in the neighboring village. He would come to Meerakpur to visit his uncle and aunty who also happened to be Suvarna’s neighbour. Rupam kept on looking at Suvarna. She was only 12 now. But, she would grow up to be prettier in couple of years. From that day, Rupam became a regular visitor to Meerakpur. His sole reason of visit was Suvarna. Rupam would look for chances to meet Suvarna and talk to her. Suvarna was too young to understand much. She found a good friend in Rupam. Years passed by and the bond between Suvarna and Rupam became stronger. On Suvarna’s 16 birthday, Rupam told her, ‘I love you Suvarna and I want to marry you.’ Suvarna blushed and said, ‘I love you too Rupam. But, we can’t marry now. My parents cannot bear the financial stress of marriage. Moreover, I am also a earning member. I too work in the fields. If I get married and I come with you, one earning member will lessen. How will my parents manage?’ Rupam held Suvarna’s hand and said, ‘You forgot that after we are married, I will also become a part of your family. And then I will also help your family financially. In fact I will talk to your parents today.’ Suvarna was elated. True to his words, Rupam went to speak with Suvarna’s parents. Suvarna’s father Raju said, ‘Suvarna is so young. I think we should wait till she is 18.’ Rupam said, ‘I have to go to the city for job. If I go now, I may not be able to return soon. Moreover, I have got some money for you. I will give you 25000 rupees. Please let me marry Suvarna.’ Suvarna’s father immediately said, ‘Well….okay. But we cannot make much arrangements for the marriage.’ Rupam said, ‘We don’t need to make any arrangements here. I will take Suvarna with me to my village. There we will get married and then I will take her to the city.’ Suvarna’s parents readily agreed.
Next day Rupam gave 25000 rupees to Raju and took Suvarna to a new place. It was a super long journey. Around 12 hours of journey by train and then 8 hours by bus. Suvarna thought that was Rupam’s village but then the place looked more like a town. It did not look like a village at all. However, Suvarna never bothered. She was lost in her world of rosy dreams. Rupam took Suvarna to a tiny room in a busy market place. He told Suvarna that next morning he would go to a temple and marry her. He gave Suvarna some pretty new clothes and asked her to freshen up while he went out to get some food. Suvarna went to the dark bathroom in the room. She could barely see anything. The water tap was partially broken but there was water in the tap. Suvarna was happy. She took a nice bath and changed into the pretty red salwar suit that Rupam had got for her. She then tried to open the front door to go out and see the hustle bustle outside, but the door wouldn’t open. Rupam had locked the door from outside. Suvarna thought maybe Rupam did that for her safety. After all it was a new place.
There was a tiny rusty window in the room. However not much could be seen from that window. There was a tiny bed in the corner. Suvarna waited for Rupam to come but then hours went by and Rupam did not come. Suvarna fell sleepy. She curled up on the bed and fell asleep. At around 12:00 a.m. she heard someone unlocking the door. Presuming it was Rupam, Suvarna fixed her dress and bangles quickly and got off the bed. No it was not Rupam. There were two herculean sized men. Seeing their silhouette, Suvarna screamed, ‘Who are you? Where is Rupam?’ The men laughed. Suvarna looked around. It was a dark, cramped room with no way to escape. The men came closer to her and pressed Suvarna’s mouth with a handkerchief sprayed with chloroform. Suvarna blacked out. When she woke up, she found herself in a colorful room with colorful walls. Some girls were there in the room. The moment they saw Suvarna regaining consciousness, they went out to call someone. After two minutes, two ladies came inside. Decked in artificial jewellery and colourful sarees with sleeveless, backless blouses, the ladies smirked when they saw Suvarna. One of the ladies was in her early 40s while the other one was in her early 50s. The older one told the younger one, ‘Latika, look at her body. No flesh. We will have to feed her well.’ Latika sneered and said, that we will Kamala Di, but we will have to feed her hormones as well. Look at her chest. It’s flat. We won’t get customers this way.’ Suvarna could not figure out what was happening. With fear in her eyes, she asked, ‘Where am I? Where is Rupam? Please take me to him.’ Latika laughed and said, ‘His name is not Rupam. His name is Mallu. He is our dealer. He bought you for us. Now you will work for us.’ Suvarna froze. She shivered and cried, ‘N..n..no…..this cannot be true.’ Suvarna joined her hands, knelt on the floor and begged, ‘Please let me go home. Please…..’ Latika patted Suvarna’s head and said, ‘ Once a girl comes here, she leaves this place only when she is dead…..’
