Disha was in 7th heaven. The very thought of Poorv and his voice would make her heart go ga ga. She could listen to him forever. She would go to his profile and check his pictures again and again. His magnetic smile would bring a wide smile on her face. She was in love. Yes, she was in love.
Poorv was not very regular in calling her. He would chat with her sometimes at night, maybe every two three days and once in a while he would call her. He did tell Disha about his hectic schedule and his life in a joint family. He had told Disha that he lived in a joint family with his parents, brothers, sisters in law, nephews and nieces. He always had some family member around him at home. Because of that it was difficult for him to call Disha from home. At office too, due to work, he barely got time to call Disha. Disha understood his situation very well. The days he did not chat with her or call her, she would feel miserable. Well, Poorv did tell her that he missed her and he really liked her, but then, Disha could not understand if he really missed her. If he missed her, how could he stay without being in touch with her everyday. Nonetheless, she would make herself understand that this is how it is and she should trust him.
Things in college went as usual. Romit was always there for Disha. Sometimes he would take her car for servicing, sometimes he would get fruits and cookies for her. Romit was also the most loved teacher in college. His students loved him. He was compassionate and a superb teacher. Today his students Amit, Rupesh, Reema and Sudha came with flowers to congratulate him for winning the best teacher of the year. For these students Romit was their lifeline. They come from modest background, but Romit helped them in getting scholarship. He helps them with all the study materials as well. They are indebted to Romit for all that he has been doing for them. The funny part is, they know Romit likes Disha and they do pull Romit’s legs whenever they see him with her. College life was blessed for Romit because of all the bliss around him.
Disha was also very popular in college. For girls like Reema and Sudha, Disha was an epitome of knowledge and she was their ideal. They looked up to her. Independent, beautiful, kind, talented and what not.
Disha was checking some answer sheets, when her phone rang. It was from Raunak.
Raunak: Hey Sis
Disha: Heya Bro
Raunak: Listen, I am reaching our town the day after tomorrow.
Disha(Thrilled): Wow!!!! Can’t wait to meet you. I am so so so so excited.
Raunak: Me too sweety. By the way, there is a surprise for you. You will know that once I am there.
Disha (Delighted): Surprise! What???? Please tell me…..
Raunak: Suprise is a surprise. I will hang up now. See you day after tomorrow….
Disha: Yayyy! Waiting bro, waiting……….
Next day Disha waited for Poorv to call her or text her. She had to tell him that Raunak was coming to India. But Poorv neither called her nor texted her. Disha presumed Poorv would be busy. Whenever he would call her, she would tell him. Also Raunak would anyway inform him. But then what was the surprise Raunak was talking about?
A day passed by and Disha could not wait for Raunak to arrive. After class, in the staffroom, Jahnvi told Disha, ‘Phewww, chill Disha chill. We all know you are going to meet your brother after a long time. You have been pacing around looking at your watch. Wouldn’t it be better if you go home?’ Munching an apple Romit said from his desk, ‘Gosh, she looks even prettier when she is super excited, doesn’t she?’ Jahnvi giggled. Disha said with an irritated tone, ‘Guys, I can’t go home now because waiting at home is worse. My parents will think I have gone crazy. Here, at least, you guys know that…’, before Disha could complete the sentence, someone said from the doorway, ‘That Disha is crazy.’ Disha turned around. It was Raunak. Disha looked at him for straight 30 seconds and rushed to hug him tight. She screamed, ‘Raunakkkkkkkk,’. Jahnvi and Romit laughed. Raunak said, ‘So, how is my little sister doing?’ Disha beamed and said, ‘I am fine bro. How are you? How is Bhaabhi, how is my little nephew? Where are they? Don’t tell me you came alone!’ Raunak said, ‘Yes, I came alone. Sheena stayed back because of Rohan’s exams. They will be here next week. I had to come little early because of some important work. I kept my luggage at home and rushed here to meet you. I know, how eagerly you would be waiting for me.’ Romit said, ‘You did the right thing. Otherwise she would have had nervous breakdown.’ Disha laughed and said, ‘Ha ha, yes, right.’ Raunak then looked at Romit and Jahnvi and said, ‘Next week, I am throwing a party for all my friends and family members. It has been ages since we all met. So, I thought this would be a wonderful idea to catch up with everyone. I will share the details of the venue and time with Disha. She will let you guys know. Please do come. Well, more than a request, it’s an order. You guys will have to come. Please bring your families along.’ Jahnvi and Romit smiled and said, ‘Sure. We will be there.’
Disha then took Raunak to her home and said, ‘Khura and Khuri ( Khura and Khuri means Chachu and Chachi in Asomiya) will have to wait. You will have to spend time with me first.’ Jayati had made steamed rice, xoriyoh di sitol maas (Knife fish in mustard paste), mutton curry, masoor dali tenga (Lentil soup with a hint of lemon) and paayokh (kheer). Raunak was overjoyed. Assamese cuisine cooked by Jayati Borma (Borma means Badi Maa) was ambrosial.
After lunch, Raunak asked Disha, ‘So, the other day you were telling me about my friend Poorv.’ The very name of Poorv, made Disha blush. She said, ‘Yes. He got in touch with me through social media.’ Raunak replied, ‘Okay. So, you guys talk often or you guys are just social media acquaintance?’ Disha became conscious. She was not sure whether she should tell Raunak all that has been happening or she should wait for some days. Disha thought this was not the right time to tell everything. Moreover, Poorv never said he was committed to her. Disha replied, ‘Well, just social media acquaintance. We do chat occasionally. That’s about it. Nothing much.’ Raunak said relieved, ‘Oh ok.’ Disha then said, ‘So, what surprise were you talking about?’ Raunak replied, ‘Well, guess it won’t be much of a surprise now. Actually in my party, I have invited Poorv as well.’ Disha’s heart skipped a beat. But, she had to be calm. She smiled and said, ‘Oh ok.’ Raunak then said nonchalantly, ‘Well, it’s not a surprise anymore for you. I thought if you meet a virtual acquaintance in person, it could be a surprise.’ Disha tried to hide her excitement. She smiled and said, ‘ Oh yes….’
He settled comfortably on his seat looking out of the window. Just then his phone rang. He received the call and said, ‘Yes love.’ Saanchi said from the other end of the call, ‘So, all set? You boarded the train?’ Mushtaque replied, ‘Yes baby.’ Saanchi then said, ‘You could have opted for air travel.’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘Last minute air tickets are expensive sweets. And don’t forget, you married an honest officer. I can’t spend extra money on unnecessary luxury.’ Saanchi laughed and said, ‘Yes I know and I am proud of that. Anyway, wish you a safe and happy journey. Enjoy with your friends and miss me. Also, don’t forget to call me as soon as your reach.’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘Yes I will. And I love you.’ Saanchi blushed and said, ‘I love you too.’
Mushtaque was wearing a pair of black cargo pants and a gray v necked t-shirt. His boots were sturdy as always. The aviator glares protected him from the bright sunlight coming from the window. The train moved slowly and then picked up pace. Some people sitting near him drifted off to sleep while some were busy talking and eating. Amidst the noise of the chugging train and chatter of the people, suddenly, there was a huge commotion. Mushtaque looked around confused. People were shrieking and screaming with fear. There was a gang of bandits in the train. They were carrying sharp knives and their faces were covered by masks. People panicked and shivered. Babies started wailing. There were 6 bandits. They threatened people to hand over all their money, jewelry and expensive stuff. Mushtaque sat there watching. The bandits were loud and scary. They then came near Mushtaque’s seat. They asked him for his watch and money. The knives the bandits were holding were razor sharp. Mushtaque took off his watch and gave it to one of the bandits. Then one of them shouted at Mushtaque and asked him to give them his wallet. Mushtaque pulled out his wallet and gave it to the bandits. There was a young girl sitting on one of the seats beside Mushtaque. She was around 18 or so. She was wearing a gold chain. One of the bandits went near her. She sat there scared to the bone. The bandit then touched her face gently and caressed her cheeks. Her parents pleaded, ‘Take whatever you want, don’t touch our daughter.’ The bandit ignored all the pleas from the parents and was about to touch the girl’s bosom when he was pulled back with a strong force and pushed on the floor. Then he felt a strong hit on his head with a sharp elbow. The bandit writhed in pain and looked behind. It was Mushtaque. The people around gasped. Just then two other bandits came surging towards mushtaque. Mushtaque moved swiftly and hit one of them on the face with a back kick with his sturdy shoes. He then snatched one knife from one of the bandits and pierced it right on the leg of another bandit. The 18 year old girl and her parents quickly grabbed a steel water flask and hit one of the bandits on his head. Some other passengers also came quickly to help. Some of them came with long scarves and ropes to tie the bandits. Mushtaque then tied all the bandits with the help of some co passengers. He then went to the bandit who had touched the girl and slapped him tight on his face. And then Mushtaque punched the bandit’s nose till blood started oozing out. With blood shot red eyes, Mushtaque looked at the bandit and said, ‘Never, ever, I repeat, never, ever, harass women.’ All the passengers stood up and clapped for Mushtaque. Mushtaque then called up the nearest police station and asked the officer in charge to come with his team to arrest these bandits at the next stop. The 18 year old girl came near Mushtaque joined her hands and said crying, ‘Thank you bhaiyya.’ Mushtaque patted her head and said, ‘You are not supposed to say thank you to your brother.’ The girls parents could not hold back their tears. The girl replied with tears in her eyes, ‘You are an angel. God bless you.’
Mushtaque disembarked from the train and went straight to the guesthouse. On his way he called Saanchi. Saanchi received the call, ‘Hi, you reached?’ Mushtaque replied, ‘Yes baby.’ Saanchi then said, ‘Hope you had a smooth journey.’ Mushtaque said affectionately, ‘Yes. I slept through out. It was a comfortable journey.’ Saanchi then said, ‘Awesome. Take care and miss me.’ Mushtaque laughed and said, ‘I will baby. Bye.’
Disha was super excited. Finally, she was going to meet Poorv in person today. She had not spoken with Poorv the entire week. Was Poorv also planning to surprise her? Well, she would pretend she was surprised. But, what would she do with the butterflies in her stomach!
She sat with Jahnvi waiting for Poorv to come. Poorv had not come as yet. The live orchestra was performing songs of yesteryears. Just then the door opened. A handsome gentleman came in. He was wearing a black collared T-shirt and a pair of blue denim trousers. Jahnvi gazed at him and said, ‘Whoa, he is so handsome.’ Just then Raunak went near the gentleman, shook hands with him, hugged him tight and said, ‘Mushtaque! Wooh, so nice to see you.’ Disha told Jahnvi, that’s Mushtaque, Raunak’s bestest buddy. Jahnvi kept on looking at Mushtaque and said, ‘He sure is handsome.’ Disha replied wearily, ‘Yes.’ Suddenly she heard Raunak saying, ‘Hey Poorv. Finally we meet again…..’. The name ‘Poorv’ was music to Disha’s ears. Disha looked at him. He was as cute as he looked in the pictures on social media. Jahnvi told Disha, ‘Aha! So here he is.’ Raunak called Disha to introduce her to Mushtaque and Poorv. Disha was gazing at Poorv. Raunak told Poorv, ‘Meet my cousin Disha’. He then told Disha, ‘And Disha, meet my friend Poorv.’ Disha kept on looking at Poorv. Poorv smiled at her, then looked at Raunak and said in friendly note, ‘Oh so, this is your little sister Disha about whom you used to tell me in college.’ Raunak laughed and said, ‘Yes.’ Poorv then looked at Disha and gave her a warm smile and said, ‘Nice meeting you Disha.’ Disha blushed and said, ‘Nice meeting you too.’ Just then Poorv’s phone rang. Poorv looked at Disha and said, ‘Please excuse me.’ Disha smiled and said, ‘Sure.’ Disha could not see any enthusiasm in Poorv. He did not seem excited to meet her, nor did he give her any hints that he wanted to spend some time with her. After the phone call, Poorv went near Raunak and Mushtaque and kept on talking with them. He did not look at Disha even once.
To be continued……………..
