Anurag introduced Mushtaque to everyone in the family. Sumedh said, ‘Thank you so much for coming son.’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘Please Uncle. Don’t say thanks. I should be here when Anurag needs me.’ Sumedh gave Mushtaque a warm smile and said, ‘Please make yourself comfortable.’ Anurag then told Mushtaque, ‘Come, I will show you your room.’ Anurag took Mushtaque to the guest room adjacent to the study room. It was a spacious room with plush décor, all the amenities, right from attached bathroom, jacuzzi, a tiny refrigerator, designer curtains, breathtaking painting, magnificent king size bed, sleek television set and what not. The room was centrally cooled.

As Mushtaque kept his things Anurag tried calling someone. The call did not go through. Anurag tried again but the number was switched off. Anurag was dejected. Mushtaque asked Anurag, ‘You look worried dude. All okay?’ Anurag said concerned, ‘Well, I really don’t know what’s going on. Is it just me or if something is really wrong.’ Mushtaque touched Anurag’s shoulder and said, ‘What is it? Tell me.’ Anurag sat on the arm chair near the bed, rubbed his forehead and said, ‘Grandma passed away suddenly. She was a fitness freak and always conscious and careful about all her food. According to the doctors, an allergy attack killed her. How can that happen? I mean, everyone in the house knows about Grandma’s allergy triggers. Maybe I am thinking too much, but, everything happened so suddenly that I am unable to accept things.’ Mushtaque listened to everything Anurag said without interrupting. Mushtaque was a good listener. Whether it was because of his profession, or he had this innate attribute, whatever be the reason, it was always a pleasure to confide one’s fears to Mushtaque because he would listen without interrupting, without judging and then he would try and see if he could find a way to diminish that fear. Mushtaque said, ‘Well, whenever some weird thoughts come to our mind, usually that could be just us and nothing is wrong. But there is no harm finding a little bit more about that. That way we will be relieved if nothing was wrong and it was just our thoughts troubling us. Right?’ Anurag nodded. He then said, ‘I have been trying to reach Kashish and Kaamini and their phones are switched off.’ Mushtaque asked, ‘Who are they?’ Anurag said, ‘Kashish has been staying with us since she was born. Her father used to work here. Her mother passed away when Kashish was very young. Some years ago, her father too died. However, grandma took care of her education and all her needs. Kaamini is a distant aunt of hers.’ Mushtaque asked, ‘Where are they now, Kashish and her aunt?’ Anurag said worried, ‘That is what is troubling me. Apparently there was some emergency in their village and hence Kaamini left with Kashish. It’s grandma’s prayer ceremony today. Kashish would never miss that. But, I can’t reach her phone.’ Mushtaque said, ‘So, she informed you and left?’ Anurag said dejected, ‘No! She barely talks to me. Kaamini had informed Maa before leaving.’ Mushtaque was about to say something when there was a knock at the door. Mushtaque opened it. Tanaya stood at the door. Seeing Mushtaque she said, ‘You must be Anurag’s friend Mushtaque, Right?’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘Yes!’ Tanaya then extended her hand and said, ‘I am Tanaya. Anurag’s Fiancée’. Mushtaque shook hands with Tanaya and then looked at Anurag puzzled. Tanaya giggled and looking at Anurag said, ‘You must not have told your friend, right?’ Anurag tried to smile and said, ‘I was about to tell him.’ Tanaya looked at Mushtaque and said, ‘Now that you are here, you must attend our engagement and wedding.’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘Sure!’ Tanaya then looked at Anurag and said, ‘I have come here to take you downstairs. Guruji is here. The prayer ceremony is about to start. Come now.’ Anurag said, ‘I am coming. You go ahead.’ Tanaya said, ‘No no. Right away.’ Saying that Tanaya walked up to Anurag, pulled his wrist and said, ‘You are coming with me now.’ Mushtaque looked at the sight perplexed. Anurag never told Mushtaque about his engagement with Tanaya.

Kashish regained her consciousness. She looked around. It was pitch dark. She was feeling nauseous. She coughed. She screamed, ‘IS ANYONE THERE? WHERE AM I? KAAMINI AUNTY! KAAMINI AUNTY!’……. Kashish banged on the door. No one came. After half an hour, a disciple of guruji came. He came with a plate of food, water and some clothes. Seeing that disciple Kashish said hysterically, ‘Where am I ? Why have I been brought here?’. She then looked at herself. She touched the ‘Mangalsutra’ on her neck, the smeared ‘Kumkum’ on her forehead and hand and then looked at her heavy lehenga and said, ‘What is this? Why am I wearing all this?’ The disciple smirked and said, ‘You have been married girl!’ Kashish looked at the disciple wide eyed and said, ‘Married? When? To Whom? What are you saying?’ The disciple laughed and said, ‘Those questions are not important. What is important now is, this place is your home now till you are alive. I have got you some clothes and food. Have this and be quiet. Your screaming will not help. Cooperate with us.’ Kashish sat at one corner of the dark room shedding tears. Who did this to her and why? Why was her life like this? First her mom left her, then her dad, then Lata Grandma and now she has no one. Why this Ashram? Who brought her here? What marriage was this? Kashish needed answer to all the questions.

Mushtaque went downstairs. Sumedh and his brothers sat in front of Guruji. Anurag was lost in thoughts. Mushtaque observed Anurag closely. Tanaya tried to be around him all the time, while Anurag seemed to be least interested. In between the prayer ceremony, Guruji’s phone rang. Guruji saw the number and instructed one of the disciples to answer the call. The disciple took the phone and went outside to the garden. On the pretext of talking to someone over the phone and no network inside, Mushtaque followed the disciple. The disciple just said, ‘ Guruji told me to tell you to give fodder to the cow.’ Mushtaque was somewhat confused. ‘Fodder to “cow”?’. ‘Only one cow and why would someone call just to ask if fodder has to be given to the cow?’ The disciple did not notice Mushtaque. He came back and sat beside Guruji.

Saanya was looking at Mushtaque. Mushtaque came near her, sat beside her and said, ‘Hi, I am Mushtaque. Anurag’s friend.’ Saanya beamed and said, ‘Yes I know. Latika told me. I was not downstairs so missed meeting you then.’ Mushtaque smiled and said, ‘So, you are?’ Saanya said, ‘ I am Saanya. My dad’s name is Subhaash. Anurag bhaiyya is my first cousin.’ Mushtaque nodded. Mushtaque then said, ‘So nice to see such a beautiful joint family.’ Saanya said, ‘Yes, it’s very nice.’ Mushtaque then said, ‘But you would need a lot of help around the house, right?’ Saanya said, ‘Yes yes. In fact we have a lot of help. But, I miss Kashish. She was an expert in everything. This Latika is new. She does not know much.’ Mushtaque said, ‘“Kashish”, that’s a nice name.’ Saanya said smiling, ‘Yes. She was nice too.’ Mushtaque asked, ‘Was?’ Saanya said, ‘Was because she no longer lives with us. Her aunty took her to the village. Poor Kashish, she is just 21. I hope her aunty does not get her married.’ Saanya was a chatterbox. She was elated to talk to Mushtaque. Mushtaque then pointed towards Tanaya and said, ‘Anurag’s fiancée is beautiful. Isn’t she?’ Saanya laughed and said, ‘She is beautiful but Anurag bhaiyya does not seem to like her much. Tanaya is like glue when it comes to Anurag Bhaiyya. Hence Bhaiyya gets pissed off.’ Mushtaque laughed. Mushtaque then asked Saanya, ‘I had never thought that I would come and meet Anurag in grandma’s prayer ceremony. It’s painful.’ Saanya sighed and said, ‘Yes. Grandma left so suddenly. She even takes her antiallergy medicines regularly. It’s so sad that she got the attack.’ Mushtaque nodded and said, ‘It’s indeed very sad.’

At night after everyone slept, Mushtaque went to Lata’s room with Anurag. Anurag asked, ‘What are we doing here?’ Mushtaque said, ‘We will just clear our doubts and leave. Can you give me the medicine your grandma used to take before bed time.’ Anurag went to the medicine shelf near Lata’s bed. Took the medicine bottle and gave it to Mushtaque. Mushtaque said, ‘Can I keep it with me?’ Anurag said, ‘Sure. Anyway it is of no use now.’ Anurag then looked at Mushtaque and said earnestly, ‘Can you help me get in touch with Kashish? Please!’ Mushtaque read something in Anurag’s eyes. So much emotion for a house help! Mushtaque patted Anurag’s shoulder and said, ‘You wish is my command. Kashish will be home soon.’ Anurag hugged Mushtaque tight. Mushtaque then told Anurag, ‘Now, take me to the room where Kashish stayed with Kaamini?’ A shadow followed Mushtaque and Anurag.

Guruji was relaxing in his abode. Changing into comfortable attire, he asked his disciple, ‘All good?’ The disciple said, ‘The girl got her periods today. She asked for sanitary napkins.’ Guruji said, ‘Give her whatever she wants. Bring her to me after 5 days.’
