Clad in a formal blue connect shirt and pair of black formal trousers with a pair of tan formal derby shoes adding charm to his fit body and charming looks, Anurag stormed into the office. He was 1 minute late for the board meeting. Anurag was a stickler for time. He apologized earnestly to the board members for being late. He then quickly commenced the meeting. As he went on with his new business proposal, the members of the board seemed happy with the new proposition. The idea was the launch of a new product that can do wonders in the digital marketing world. This was an entirely new concept and this idea was the brain child of Subhash Kothari, Sumit Kothari, Som Kothari and Aavish Kothari. Aavish was to lead the project since he was adept in this new technology and, Sara Khanna and Nihaar Jagtap will be the other two team leads in this project. All the goals were set and the board members voted ‘yes’ for the project. The clients were more than happy to fund this great initiative.

During lunch break, Nishi saw the wrist watch Kashish was wearing. Nishi was Kashish’s best friend in college. Seeing the trendy watch, Nishi screeched, ‘Whoaaaa! What a watch! When did you buy it?’ Hearing Nishi screech, Akshit (buddy of Kashish and Nishi) said, ‘Really! Where did you get this pretty watch Kashish?’ Kashish smiled and said, ‘It’s a gift.’ Akshit said surprised, ‘Gift? Apart from Lata grandma, who gave you gift, ever, in that family?’ Nishi snapped at Akshit and said, ‘Stop being so insensitive Akshit. Lata grandma is no more. Maybe someone in the family gave her this.’ Akshit sneered and said, ‘No one in that family loves her. If someone gave her a gift it has to be for some selfish motive.’ Nishi clenched her teeth and told Akshit, ‘Shut up. Will you?’ Nishi then looked at Kashish and said, ‘Beautiful watch Kashish. Anyway, let’s have lunch now.’ Akshit took out his lunch box, opened the lid and said, ‘It’s “Suji Halwa” and “Puri” today.’ He then offered his lunch to Kashish and said, ‘ You love Halwa Puri, don’t you?’ Nishi said with a taunt in her voice, ‘Oho, so only Kashish likes Halwa Puri, and I don’t?’ Kashish laughed and said, ‘ We all love Halwa Puri so we will all share and eat.’ Nishi and Kashish took out their lunch boxes too and they all started eating, when Kashish’s phone rang. Kashish hesitantly took out the phone from her bag. She knew if her friends saw the phone, they will get shocked again. After all it was an expensive phone and of the latest model. And indeed, the moment they saw Kashish’s phone, Nishi and Akshit gasped again. Kashish quietly got up and went to a corner to receive the call. It was from Anurag.

Kashish (in her usual soft voice): Hello….

Anurag: Had lunch?

Kashish: About to. You had?

Anurag: Will have in sometime. Did you even pack your lunch box well?

Kashish(meekly): I did pack it well and my friends got some yum food too today.

Anurag: I hope you are not lying.

Kashish (smiling) : No, I can send you a picture to prove.

Anurag(laughing): No, you don’t need to. I can gauge when you are lying and when you are not. I know you are telling the truth. Anyway, see you in the evening. I will ask my driver to pick you up. I barely need him, I enjoy driving my own car.

Kashish: Nooo! No please Sir. People in my college will start asking questions….please don’t send the driver, I will go on my own.

Anurag(casually): So? Why are you afraid of questions? Let them ask. Tell them. Or else, I can meet them and tell them.

Kashish: No, Sir. Please. I will manage…..

Anurag: Again Sir?….. Fine, if you don’t want the driver to come, it’s okay. Just let me know once you reach home.

Kashish: I will.

Anurag: And, I had to tell you something…..

Kashish: Yes….

Anurag(smiling): I love you……..

Kashish(Blushing): I need to go now. Lunch time will be over soon.

Anurag (laughing) : I know you won’t tell me the words I want to hear. Now, go and finish your lunch. Will see you in the evening.

Saying that Anurag kissed the phone. Kashish blushed and hung up.

Akshit had seen the name ‘Sir’ flashing on Kashish’s phone screen. Akshit asked Nishi, ‘Who is Kashish talking to for so long?’ Nishi snarled at him and said, ‘Why do you need to know?’ Akshit said impudently, ‘I need to know because she had already been in a lot of trouble because of that Kothari family. And I don’t want her to be in trouble anymore.’ Nishi said curtly, ‘No, it’s not because of that. It’s because you like her. And I know that very well. So, shut up and eat your food and don’t ask her any more questions.’

The day at office was super hectic for Anurag, Aavish and the entire team. Till 11.00 p.m., they were all engrossed in work. At around 11:05 p.m., Anurag told Aavish, Sara, and Nihaar, ‘Guys, you should all go home now. It’s late.’ Anurag then told Nihaar and Aavish, ‘One of you drop Sara home. It’s too late for her to go home alone. Aavish said, ‘Bhai, I can’t go now. I have an urgent client call in another 15 minutes.’ Nihaar said, ‘I will be going to my friend’s home now and the route to Sara’s home is different from that route.’ Sara said, ‘It’s okay guys. I will manage.’ Anurag said, ‘No no, I will drop you home. Aavish can take care of the client calls.’

As Anurag drove, Sara looked outside the window. Fixing her shirt, she looked at Anurag and said, ‘Thank you! Sometimes the roads are very scary.’ Withoit looking at her, Anurag said, ‘It’s no trouble Sara. You work with us and your safety is a priority.’ The road was smooth with no traffic at all. They reached Sara’s place in half an hour. Anurag stopped the car and Sara got off. She then said, ‘Thanks again Anurag!’ Anurag smiled and said, ‘Oh come on Sara. It’s okay! Good night!’ Sara replied, ‘Good night!’ As Anurag was about to leave, Sara said, ‘Ummmm, Anurag…would you like to come over for a cup of coffee?’ Anurag said, ‘Thanks Sara, but No. I have to rush home now. Mom must be waiting.’ Sara said, ‘Actually, my neighbors are out of town and I am little skeptical about entering the premises alone. If you could walk me to my apartment? We can also have a quick cup of coffee.’ Anurag was concerned about her safety. Hence he parked his car and accompanied her to her house.

Kashish was working on her assignments. She had to submit them tomorrow. Anurag was late. Kashish was worried. She wanted to call him but then there were times when Anurag would be late from work. Moreover, she barely called Anurag. Although they both knew that they loved each other, yet Kashish had always been a bashful girl. Somehow she could never bring herself to call Anurag or come close to him. Occasionally when she would be in the kitchen alone, Anurag would come unannounced, wrap his arms around her waist would put a tight peck on her cheek and leave. She would be astonished, she would shiver, she would blush and Anurag would wink at her before leaving the kitchen. She would not stop him when he hugged her, she would not stop him when he brushed her hair. She loved it when he touched her cheeks, she loved it when he brushed his finger on her neck, she loved it when he felt he had every right on her. All the same, he respected her, never forced himself on her. She loved it when he said she too had every right on him. But she herself could never go and hug him or kiss him. Not that she did not want to. Sometimes she wondered will she be this shy with him all her life…..

Kashish yawned and looked at her phone. It was 12:00 a.m. Anurag should have been home by now. She looked at his number on the phone, hesitated and after a few minutes called him. The number was unreachable. Just then Kashish’s phone rang. It was from Akshit. Kashish thought, ‘Akshit calling me at this hour? Hope everything is okay.’ Kashish received the call.

Akshit: You haven’t slept as yet? I saw you online hence called.

Kashish: Oh! I thought there was some emergency, hence you called. I was working on the assignments.

Akshit: Why? Can’t I call you without any emergency?

Kashish: No no, nothing like that. It’s late at night. Hence I was worried.

Akshit: Ok. Got it. Now, go to sleep.

Kashish(in a concerned tone): Hmm

Akshit: You sound worried. All okay?

Kashish: Well, I usually wait for everyone to finish dinner before I go to bed. Umm…. Anurag Sir is not home as yet. So….

Akshit: Anurag Sir! Well, these are rich brats. He would be busy with some girlfriend of his. Don’t wait for him. Go and get some sleep.

Kashish wanted to slam Akshit but she kept quiet. She knew Akshit detested the Kothari family because he felt the people were not nice to her. But then he had no right to hurl abuses at Anurag or anyone in the Kothari family. Without saying anything, Kashish hung up.

Anurag sat on the leather couch while Sara went to make coffee. Anurag looked at his phone. The battery had drained out. After coffee, he would be on his way home. Hence he did not bother charging his phone. Sara came with two cups of coffee. Anurag looked around the house. There were pictures of Sara with a little baby. Anurag asked, ‘Who is she?’ Sara said, ‘She is my daughter.’ Anurag asked surprised, ‘You never told me you had a daughter.’ Sara said solemnly, ‘She stays with my parents. I am a widow.’ Anurag said somberly, ‘Oh! I am so sorry.’ Sara smiled and said, ‘Don’t be. You did not know.’ Saying that Sara offered coffee to Anurag. Anurag drank his coffee and continued chit chatting. After he finished his coffee, he was about leave when he felt a piercing headache. He sat down. Sara panicked and asked, ‘Are you okay Anurag?’ Anurag said, ‘I am fine. I don’t know I got this splitting headache suddenly.’ Sara said concerned, ‘It’s already very late Anurag. Why don’t you stay back tonight. You can inform your family. There is an extra guestroom. Stay there comfortably. Go home tomorrow morning.’ Anurag clutched his head and said, ‘I guess so. I won’t be able to drive.’ Sara helped Anurag to the guestroom and helped him lie on the bed. Sara said, ‘Please get some sleep. I will get you some water.’ Saying that, Sara went to her room, changed into her satin night dress and went to the kitchen. She got a bottle of water and went to Anurag’s room. Anurag was already in a deep swoon………..
