Sumitra was arranging the clothes in her closet. She had dark circles beneath her eyes. Because of the prolonged court proceedings and no bail despite the Kothari family’s earnest endeavors, she had to spend some painful days in jail. She longed to sleep but the woes of the prison life haunted her. Kashish never pressed any charges on Sumitra, but then, because of official holidays, non availability of the right lawyer, Sumitra had to spend quite some time in the prison. She looked haggard and worn out. Just then Kashish knocked at the door. Sumitra looked at her and said, ‘You don’t need permission to come to my room. Please come.’ Kashish was holding a tray with a plate of fruits, a plate of two slices of veg grilled sandwich and a glass of milk. She came and put the tray on the table adjacent to the bed. Kashish then walked up to Sumitra and said, ‘Please eat something. You haven’t eaten anything since last night.’ Sumitra looked at Kashish with remorse and said, ‘I did you so much wrong and yet, you are being so nice to me.’ Kashish went near Sumitra, knelt beside her and said, ‘You did me no wrong. Whatever you did, you did it for your family. Please, don’t bring this topic ever again. Let bygones be bygones. Now, please eat something.’ Saying that Kashish brought the plate of sandwich and gave it to Sumitra. With teary eyes, Sumitra took the plate. Kashish then said, ‘I will come to check in another 20 minutes. Till then I hope you will finish your food Ma’am.’ Sumitra looked at Kashish, nodded and said, ‘How can you be so kind?’….
Kashish rushed to the kitchen to finish the remaining chores and serve breakfast to the rest of the family members. She had to go for her classes as well. While she made the flat breads, sandwiches and juice, Latika made tea and coffee and heated up the milk. Kashish then arranged everything neatly on the dining table. One by one the family members came at the breakfast table. Aavish was the first to come followed by Subhash, Naina, Saanya and the rest. As Kashish came to serve the food, Naina said with her acid tongue, ‘My son is in jail because of this servant and look at her audacity to be nonchalant about everything.’ Subhash immediately looked at Naina sternly and said, ‘Whatever Sanmit is going through now is all because of his deeds. Stop cursing Kashish.’ Kashish had been bearing the brunt of acid tongue of Naina from the day she came home from the hospital. Although every word of Naina hurt her, Kashish would tell herself, ‘After all Sanmit is her son. It’s okay if venting at me helps her ease her pain.’ Aavish looked at Kashish, Kashish smiled back at him as if Naina’s words were not hurtful at all. Kashish went back to the kitchen after serving food to everyone. She looked at the casserole. There was one flat bread. She looked at the saucepan on the gas stove. No curry left. She looked at her watch. She had just 15 minutes to wrap up her work and go to college. She quickly put that one flat bread in her tiffin box with a tiny bit of pickle and kept it aside. She then went to the dining room to check if anyone needed anything. Just then someone stood right behind her and said, ‘Good morning Kashish!’ Kashish turned around. It was Anurag. She blushed and said, ‘Good Morning!’. Anurag then said, ‘Come, have your breakfast. You are running late for your classes.’ Naina and Tripti looked at Anurag with scorn. Kashish could feel the hatred in the eyes of those ladies. Kashish hesitated and said, ‘I….I had breakfast already. I need to rush now.’ Just then Dviti interrupted, ‘When did you have breakfast Kashish Di? You never came and joined us.’ Urmi snapped at Dviti and said, ‘Focus on your food. You don’t have to worry about outsiders.’ Anurag looked at Urmi and said politely, ‘No one is an outsider here.’ Anurag then went to the dining table, pulled a chair, looked at Kashish and said, ‘Sit quietly and finish your breakfast. Now!’ Kashish could feel the disgust in the eyes of Urmi, Tripti and Naina. But there was no way she could say ‘No’ to Anurag. He would never listen. Aavish smiled at the very sight. As Kashish sat, Anurag took a plate, put two flatbreads there along with a bowl of curry, some fruits and a muffin. He then put that plate in front of Kashish and said, ‘Eat every morsel in the plate. Doctor has strictly said that you need to eat well or else your hemoglobin level will dip.’ Anurag then poured some milk in a glass and put it near Kashish’s plate and said, ‘Gulp down the milk as well.’ While the rest of the family members were not at all happy with the attention Kashish was getting, Aavish smiled to himself and murmured, ‘Bravo Anurag Bhai.’ Anurag then pulled a chair beside Kashish and while eating, started talking to Aavish and Som regarding new business prospects.
Sumitra ate some bit of her breakfast and went and stood near the window. Just then her husband Sumedh came. Seeing Sumedh, Sumitra said, ‘Did you eat?’ Sumedh did not reply. He opened the closet and casually looked for something. He did not pay even the slightest attention to what Sumitra was saying. Sumitra knew Sumedh was deliberately avoiding her. Sumedh had blamed her for all the mess that happened. Sumitra was crestfallen. She was agonized. But she told herself, ‘Everything will be fine soon. The days won’t be dark forever.’
Kashish went to her room, opened her closet and pulled out a cotton white ‘Chikankari’ kurta, a pair of light pink leggings and a light pink scarf and hurriedly got ready for her classes. She tied her hair neatly into a ponytail and wore a shade of light pink lipstick on her soft lips. She then grabbed her bag and rushed out to the bus stop. She was already late and the bus was yet to arrive. Her wrist watch had broken down and her phone was lost when she was kidnapped. Without a watch or a phone, it was difficult to keep track of time. More so, in the group chats she used to get information about classes, exams and all. With the phone gone, it’s difficult to get all the information. Earlier Lata used to take care of all the needs of Kashish. With Lata, Kashish did not even have to tell what she needed. Lata would know all of it by instinct. And Kashish never liked asking for things. That’s the whole reason she wanted to be financially independent.
As Kashish stood there waiting for the bus, a ritzy car came and stopped right in front of her. The person driving the car, peeped out of the car window and said, ‘I told you I will drop you. Why didn’t you wait?’ Kashish fumbled for words, ‘Sir….’. Anurag smiled and said, ‘Again Sir?…. Anyway, hop on. It’s already late.’ Kashish said, ‘I…..I….will manage. You go ahead. You will get late.’ Anurag took of his glares, looked at Kashish with stern eyes and said, putting stress in all the words, ‘Get Into The Car.’ Kashish knew Anurag hated arguments. She boarded the passenger seat promptly. Anurag started driving and while focusing on the road, told Kashish, ‘Seat belt.’ Kashish quickly buckled up.
While Kashish was quiet through out, Anurag said, ‘Why do you try to avoid me all the time Kashish? You know you are my fiancée, right?’ Kashish said nothing. Anurag said, ‘Kashish! I am talking to you!’ Kashish replied softly, ‘No one in the house likes me. And no one is happy with your decision. I don’t want to hurt anyone.’ Concentrating on the road, Anurag said, ‘Oh okay! So, you don’t want to marry me?’ Kashish replied shocked, ‘NO! I never said that.’ Anurag replied nonchalantly, ‘No? You don’t want to marry me?’ Kashish was at a loss of words. Fumbling, she said, ‘N…No…I meant……’ Before she could complete her sentence, Anurag said, ‘Your college is here.’ Kashish quickly unbuckled the seat belt and wanted to complete her sentence, ‘I never meant….’. Anurag replied, looking for a spot to stop the car, ‘Wait! There are cars coming from behind. Don’t open the door now. I will stop the car a little ahead.’ Anurag stopped the car a little ahead and told Kashish, ‘Now, you can get off ’ Kashish was about to disembark from the car, when Anurag said, ‘There is a small box in the rear seat. Take that with you.’ Kashish looked at Anurag puzzled. Anurag said with love in his eyes, ‘ Your classes must have started already, grab that box and rush now.’ Kashish took the box from the rear seat and hurried to her class wondering what was there in the box. During one of the breaks when she opened the box, she was in for a pleasant surprise. The box had the latest smart phone and a swanky women’s watch. There was a note with it. ‘The phone is all ready to use. I have added my number in the contact list. And yes, I love you Kashish.’ Kashish could not stop smiling. She blushed and whispered to herself, ‘I love you too Anurag…..Sir?’ Saying that she smiled again.
Meanwhile, some people knew for sure that this marriage will never take place because they will not let this marriage happen. Never.
To be continued…………………..
